The Ascension of the Lord (Spasovdan), Belgrade’s saint patron day

June 5, 2008

The City of Belgrade celebrated its patron saint’s day with the holy liturgy in the Church of the Ascension served by several bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The religious procession held in the central Belgrade streets was headed by the dignitaries of the Serbian Orthodox Church who, on behalf of Patriarch Pavle, extended congratulations to the brotherhood of the Church of the Ascension and Belgrade citizens, followed by representatives of city authorities, as well as Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic. The Jerusalem Cross was carried at the head of the procession followed by the standard of the City of Belgrade from 1939, people dressed in medieval knights and warriors, as well as children in national folk costumes. Belgrade elected the feast of the Ascension of the Lord in memory of the year 1403 when Despot Stefan Lazarevic proclaimed Belgrade a Serbian capital. The religious holiday is celebrated in the memory of the day when Jesus Christ addressed his apostles for the very last time.
